The ancient walled city of Fez’s “Medina” is a UNESCO World Heritage site as its one of the best preserved cities of its kind! The ~10,000 alleys mean getting lost inside is all a part of the fun. Walking the passages at times no more than 6 ft wide with 15 ft walls on either side makes it feel like you’ve got back in time 800+ yrs!
I highly recommend including 2-3 nights in Fez in your Moroccan itinerary. The easiest way to visit will be with a rental car, we got ours from AirCar through DiscoverCars for just under $30 a day!
Where to Stay
There’s a ton of accommodation options in Fez due to the numerous Riads (a traditional Moroccan house with a central courtyard). You’ll find everything from luxury Raids to budget hostels. I’d recommend staying somewhere inside the old walled city. Just know that if you stay in the walled city, cars aren’t allowed inside so you may have to lug your bags quite a ways, but the nicer hotels usually send someone with a baggage cart to help you!
Places are roughly listed from starting prices high-to-low.

What To-Do
Arguably the best thing to do around Fez is meander the Medina and get lost among the shops & alleyways. Find a cafe near an open square and sit and grab a Moroccan Mint Tea. I’d highly recommend taking one of the walking tours to appreciate more of the history of this ancient city. Even if you don’t take a walking tour, make sure to visit the Chouara Tannery, Al Attarine Medrasa, and visit a Hammam!
